Double Olympic cycling champion Ed Clancy has backed a bike race around Huddersfield town centre.
And Huddersfield Town fan Ed says he’s ‘gutted’ he won’t be able to take part in the second annual Huddersfield Criterium, on July 8, due to other commitments.
Ed, who grew up in Denby Dale, Upperthong and Ingbirchworth, has praised the one-mile race which takes iaround the town centre on a route taking in Market Place, John William Street, Railway Street, Cloth Hall Street, Market Street, Ramsden Street, Corporation Street, Victoria Lane and King Street.
Ed, who secured a gold and bronze at London 2012, said: “I always enjoy competing back home in Yorkshire, so I’m gutted not to be riding in the Huddersfield Criterium this year.
“It’s a great opportunity for people in the local area to see some fast-paced racing and get close to the action, and I’m sure they’ll put on a great race.”
Last year, thousands flocked to watch the first Huddersfield Criterium – three races involving 160 riders.

A criterium is the name for a bike race held on a short course – usually less than a mile – in city or town centre streets.
Last year’s criterium comprised three races: one for amateurs, one for young riders and one for professionals and top amateurs, including riders from Europe and Mexico.
This year’s event has four races, including an additional women’s race.
And with speeds exceeding 20mph there will be thrills for spectators too.
A Huddersfield Criterium spokesperson said: “The races will be held right in the heart of the town, with all roads being closed so spectators can freely move around the circuit.
“The streets challenge riders skills, as they stream past at breathtaking speeds attempting to improve their position.
“Spectators will be at the very heart of the race; the atmosphere will be electric!”
Endurance rider Ed, 30, was born in Barnsley but grew up closer to Huddersfield.
He trained with Holme Valley Wheelers in his teens and was spotted by British Cycling officials for the national squad, aged 15.
Ed, who rides for JLT-Condor, won gold in team pursuit and bronze in omnium at London 2012.
