A MAN died and two other people were injured in a horrific car smash in Huddersfield today.

The blue Subaru Impreza lost control on the approach to the Asda roundabout, in Bradford Road, just before 6am.

The car skidded and ploughed sideways into a lamp-post killing the driver who was thought to be in his mid-20s.

Fire crews from Huddersfield were the first on the scene and had to cut the roof from the car to release the two male and one female passengers.

Police have confirmed they want to speak to passengers in another car they believe may have been travelling with the Subaru.

Huddersfield Fire Station watch manager Alan Woodcock described the rescue operation as "delicate".

"We were the first on the scene even before the ambulance crews so our first aider had to access the situation immediately," he said.

"We had to work closely with medics because it was very difficult to cut the roof and sides of the car away to get to the injured people.

"The woman was the first one we got out - she had leg and eye injuries."

Further down Bradford Road at the Hillhouse traffic lights in Fartown a police patrol car was involved in an accident while speeding to the fatal crash outside Asda. Two officers were treated for minor injuries when they hit an Audi A4 and continued in to a wall.

An Asda employee said he was working when the accident happened on the roundabout.

"I did not hear anything but people came in and said there had been a big accident.

"I was shocked when I saw the car it is a mess. I can't imagine anybody walking away from that."

Insp Steve Dent, of Huddersfield Police, said anyone who saw the car either last night or early this morning should get in touch.

"Details at this stage are a bit sketchy and it is vital that we speak to anyone with information.

"When emergency services arrived at the scene there were people already here which suggests another car may have been travelling with this one.

"We will be looking through CCTV footage later today."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 6060606.

Accident Investigation teams closed the road until lunchtime.
