GRANDPARENTS Ann and Stephen Fitt had just one Christmas wish this year.

They wanted to put a smile back on the faces of their three grandchildren, who lost their mother suddenly this summer.

And thanks to The Examiner and Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table, they've done just that.

First, a sackful of presents will help the children get them through this difficult time.

Then, we've arranged a family break at Center Parcs Oasis Whinfell Forest in the Lake District to give 2004 a better start.

The leisure company was so touched by the children's story that it offered them either a three-night weekend or four-night mid-week break in the new year.

Sally Ann Kaye was just 30 when she died in her sleep at her Rastrick home in August.

Eight-year-old Jordan, Danny, four, and baby William, nine months are now preparing for their first Christmas with their dad James but without their mum.

Grandma Ann Fitt was among several people who nominated the children for the Examiner Christmas Wish campaign.

We have teamed up with the Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table to bring festive cheer to children and adults who have suffered illness and hardship throughout the year.

And Jordan, Danny and baby William were among the most deserving causes nominated.

Mrs Fitt explained that Sally, who was on maternity leave from her job as a psychiatric nurse, complained about feeling unwell and went to bed early.

But when baby William started crying the following morning and her husband went to comfort him, he discovered his wife had died in her sleep.

A post mortem revealed she had bronchial pneumonia.

"It was a terrible shock to us all. We've told Danny his mummy is in heaven. Jordan was really quiet at first, it hit her later, and William will never know his mummy," said Mrs Fitt.

"It would be wonderful to have a little extra for them, this first Christmas without their mummy."

And she revealed that Sally's death was more tragic because James's mother Betty Kaye died just two days before and the funerals of the children's grandma and mummy were on successive days.

Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table has provided cash to help make Christmas wishes come true for deserving children and adults nominated by Examiner readers.
