Residents blighted by “potentially fatal” black ice and a spate of car accidents outside their homes have slammed Kirklees Council - and resorted to gritting the road themselves.

Round Ings Road in Outlane has been branded as “treacherous” after its constant black ice has caused numerable road accidents.

Following the Examiner’s report of a crash on the road last Monday, one neighbour claims another four accidents took place the same morning.

But despite their pleas with the council, residents say the road is not gritted regularly despite its “catalogue” of accidents - one including a baby.

Joanne McDade said: “It’s just a combination of everything that makes a road dangerous.

“Water is draining onto the road from adjoining fields and turns to ice in the winter.

“Drivers just put their foot down coming down the hill as there are no speed bumps.

“At night it’s really dark as only one of the street lamps work.”

Mrs McDade, 40, added that husband Adrian can’t even stand up on the ice when he walks the family dog it is so slippery.

The family have resorted to buying a tractor and helping to grit the road for fears of a fatal accident.

Another resident, pensioner Tony Taylor, said he had written to Kirklees “many times”.

Mr Taylor, 76, said: “Cars come down the hill way too fast, see the black ice and brake, causing them to crash into the wall or one of our gates.

“How someone hasn’t been killed I don’t know.”

Mrs McDade, who manages Mac’s Truck Sales in Outlane, added: “I feel it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality on this stretch of road either in a vehicle or by one of the many joggers and walkers that use the road regularly.

“It would terrible for someone to get hurt and know that it could have been prevented.

“Last year a frightened deer ran out into the road as the wall was down and a van went straight into it without stopping.

“I had to pay the local vet to come out and put it to sleep as it was suffering so badly.”
