Long-running roadworks at the bottom of Newsome Road have finally ended.

They had been delayed and then, when engineers thought they were finished and were about to resurface the carriageway, they discovered a suspected leak after filling in the trenches.

That has now been sorted and the roadworks – along with the temporary traffic lights which had caused long hold-ups – have now all gone.

The works at the junction of Newsome Road and Kings Mill Lane were to replace an old gas main. They started in mid October and should have taken three weeks.

Patrick Horton, network officer for Northern Gas Networks said: “We’d like to apologise to motorists and other members of the public who may have been inconvenienced during our recent gas works at Newsome Road, Huddersfield. We appreciate that residents and motorists were inconvenienced for longer than we anticipated but once we started excavating we discovered that a substantial amount of additional work was required.

“Rather than returning in a few months’ time again we decided to do the work immediately rather than causing more disruption at a later time.

“I can confirm that all of our work is completed and once again, we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Finally I’d like to reassure the pubic that we always aim to carry out our work quickly and safely, keeping disruption to an absolute minimum.”
