Some 700 school pupils transformed Huddersfield Town Hall into an Asian music hub.

Vibrant colours filled the iconic concert hall when 730 students from primary schools across the region attended a special event as part of Mrs Sunderland Festival.

The first such event of its kind, they danced the day away to the sounds of Bhangra and Nepali dance thanks to the guidance of Asian music experts.

Organisers of the festival held the event to promote the diverse music of the continent and celebrate the multiculturalism of Kirklees.

Asian music specialist, Beccy Owen and University of Huddersfield researcher Hardeep Sahoda led the morning events.

Pupils raised the spirits with their lively performances of a variety of folk songs which were collected by Beccy from her travels around the world.

Hardeep’s Sikh Dohl Drumming Dancing Group then performed a stunning dance display, which was interspersed by cleverly co-ordinated routines put together by children at Lindley Junior School.

Festival volunteer, Jenny Lockwood, said: “It was a marvellous sight to see.

“It was a very colourful occasion and was a great way to show how we embrace all cultures through our work.”

The large-scale event was made possible thanks to one of the festival’s volunteers, Charmain Beaumont, who initially came up with the idea and leads the themed day events each year.

Later that day a ukulele performance was held, along with competitions for instrumental groups such as a guitar orchestras and a pianist trio.

Meanwhile another event saw more children and teenagers sing their hearts out as they competed for top positions in choir categories.

Festival chairman Ray Brown said: “We almost filled all the audience seats, which is wonderful and we have so many entries for the adult categories that we have had to cancel the lunch break.”
