A HUDDERSFIELD couple who met on the tennis courts have celebrated their diamond wedding.

Former LB Holliday director Peter Bailey, 81, and his wife Margaret, 82,met in their teens playing tennis at Park Road Methodist Chapel, Crosland Moor.

They married at the same church in 1944, on leave from the armed forces, and enjoyed a two-day honeymoon in Morecambe before returning to their posts.

Mr Bailey served in the Mediterranean as an engineer in the Royal Navy while Mrs Bailey, who was in the Women's Air Force, was seconded to a US air base in Cornwall.

After the war, the couple, who have a son, a daughter and four grandchildren, lived in Kirkburton for 35 years before moving to their current home at Huddersfield Road, Meltham Mills.

Mr Bailey spent 32 years working at L B Holliday, off Leeds Road, before founding VC Filters International, formerly of Leeds Road, in 1975 where he worked until his retirement in 1993.

The couple are celebrating with a family get-together.
