Friends of tragic Huddersfield Town fan Gavin Greig hope to name the club’s new racehorse in his memory.
Text message suggestions for the unnamed two-year-old filly are flooding in but one name is galloping ahead.
Gavin, 23, of Golcar, died of cancer last month and there was a minute’s applause at Town’s home game against Cardiff City.
Local footballers also stood in tribute to much-respected goalkeeper Gavin who fought back to health after a heart transplant at the age of nine.
As well as being a big Town fan, Gavin loved his horseracing and a campaign is underway to name the Town racehorse after him.
Friends have suggested GGtwentythree – and the name is available with the racing authorities.
The filly, as yet unraced, is being syndicated by Town fan Richard Ward, a businessman and professional gambler.
Fans can buy small stakes and a text message ‘competition’ is underway to name her.
Anyone can put names forward but it’s not a vote. Town ambassador Andy Booth will sift through the suggestions and pick his favourite. The winner receives a 1% share in the horse.
Gavin’s best friend and next door neighbour, Gary Home, said he hoped the sheer volume of suggestions for GGtwentythree would win the day.

“Gavin would love that,” he said. “He was a big horseracing fan and loved a gamble. GGtwentythree is just a class name and tons of people are texting through.
“I know it’s not about which name gets most votes but if there’s so many suggesting the same one it will be hard to ignore.”
Gavin’s love of horses was also reflected at his funeral when a horse-drawn hearse carried his body from his workplace, Broadbent’s in Huddersfield, to church.
Richard, formerly of Cowcliffe, said the choice of name would be down to club legend Booth but added: “I will make sure he knows why so many people have suggested GGtwentythree.
“Whichever name is chosen I will ensure GG23 is added to the collar of the jockey’s silks as a tribute to Gavin.”
The jockey will wear a blue jacket with grey chevron and a blue and white striped cap, the colours of Richard’s Blue Grey Chevron racing syndicate.
To suggest a name text the word ‘horse’ followed by your suggestion to 82070. The closing date is February 29.
