RED-FACED bobbies had some explaining to do after a pan left on an oven caught fire.

Officers discovered Deighton Police Station full of smoke at 8.20am yesterday.

They doused the flames with a fire extinguisher and alerted firefighters.

They discovered the remnants of a pan on the oven - and the electric ring was still burning brightly.

The rest of the police station, at Keldregate, was damaged by smoke.
