MOTORISTS could be given some relief from controversial Sunday parking charges.

Kirklees Council's Cabinet is today considering watering down the new system in Huddersfield town centre.

From June 4 Sunday parking in Huddersfield will cost 50p an hour or £1 for four hours.

But a new proposal would see these fees starting at noon, rather than 10am.

The maximum time for street parking at 50p would be extended from one hour to 90 minutes.

A separate decision on charging at the Kingsgate centre will also be made at the meeting.

Council leader Clr Robert Light said: "We've listened to people's views on this issue and tried to make changes where possible."

But Tony Coletta, of the Huddersfield Town Centre Association, says any Sunday charging will be bad for business.

He said: "We can't understand why Kirklees wishes to bring in these charges. It is the only council in the region doing this, which is bound to disadvantage Huddersfield compared to Wakefield, Manchester, Leeds and Halifax."
