A HUDDERSFIELD businessman has come out on top in his battle with corporate might.

Self-employed salesman Nick Hurt was hit with a £150 parking fine for staying 10 minutes longer than the 90-minute maximum at the PC World car park at Leeds Road on March 13.

But now the company who run the car park have decided Mr Hurt, from Honley, doesn’t have to pay the fine after all.

Mr Hurt, 46, said: “The small man has won, hurrah.

“As far as I am concerned the matter is now closed.”

Despite the car park being outside PC World at the Phoenix Retail Park, it is actually run by private operator Civil Enforcement Ltd.

They are the company who also cancelled a similar fine for £150 issued to Natalie Jackson in September for parking outside the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and takeaway at Leeds Road, Huddersfield.

It was a shopping trip for a new computer that turned costly for Mr Hurt.

He was hit with a £150 “fine” for staying 10 minutes more than the 90-minute maximum.

Mr Hurt blamed staff shortages for the delay in the store.

The car park serves the PC World shop at the small retail park.

Mr Hurt had announced he planned to pursue legal action against Civil Enforcement after being told that despite his complaint, they were “not in a position to remove his notice”.

He went into PC World just to get the details of the landlord who owns the car park and to be told again that the car park was nothing to do with them.

Mr Hurt said: “Two hours later I received a phone call from Civil Enforcement telling me that the matter had been dropped or to use their words ‘there had been a recalculation’.

“This was confirmed the following day in writing.

“There’s a sense of relief, but I would have quite happily gone to county court.

“I would have made a counter claim against PC World as well, because it was their staff shortage that caused my delay in the first place and their attitude has been quite poor.

“I want my case to be a warning to other people and also shame those involved, as I think it’s appalling.”

A spokesman for PC World said: “Although we have a PC World store at the retail park we are unfortunately not responsible for the parking policy”.
