YOUNG people across Kirklees could soon have their own youth parliament.

It is hoped that an initial group of about 15 youngsters will help establish the parliament - and exactly what it can do - on February 1.

This meeting will take place at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium.

It is hoped that one day elections among youngsters in the borough could take place.

Clr Jim Dodds, Kirklees Cabinet member for children's services, believes a lot of the elements are already in place.

He said 15 candidates from the region stood for the UK Youth Parliament. Two were selected, but all the people who stood have remained in contact.

Clr Dodds said they could form the nucleus of the emerging Kirklees youth parliament.

And he said there were a number of groups in the area that could feed into the scheme.

These include the Youth Opportunity Fund, the seven Youth 4Em groups and school councils.
