Part of a busy Huddersfield car park is to be closed from Monday.

Kirklees Council says part of Queensgate Market multi-storey car park in Huddersfield will be blocked off for three weeks.

And more work starting in May will mean another closure.

Essential maintenance has been under way for several months and Monday sees the start of the latest phase.

The car park has 576 spaces and is heavily used by people visiting the town centre for shopping, for events at Huddersfield Town Hall and for courses at the University.

The council have been repairing large areas of concrete used in the construction of the car park.

A council spokesman said: “The refurbishment of Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market Hall multi-storey car park continues with the start of two phases of work.

“The work in phase one will begin on Monday, April 14 and take around three weeks to complete.

“It will affect levels zero, one and three. The lower entrance will be open but drivers will need to use the ground level exit on level four on Alfred Street.

“The second phase of work will start in May and also take around three weeks to complete.

“The number of spaces available will be shown on the ring road signs”.

The car park has operated a Pay on Foot system since 2006.

Pay on Foot requires motorists to take a ticket at the barrier on entering the car park and pay at the end of their visit.

But from May 5 the car park will become pay and display and will enable drivers to choose from a range of methods to pay for their parking.
