A TOT of brandy helped 100-year-old Mrs Amy Bamforth celebrate her birthday.

Mrs Bamforth has lived in Newsome since 1968, previously living in Springwood for 35 years.

Her only daughter, Mrs Wyn Hallas, said her mum had had years of illness in her youth and it was remarkable that she had achieved her centenary.

She said: "She's never been a smoker, but she's always liked a drink - brandy or whisky. I expect she'll have a tot of brandy today."

Mrs Bamforth worked at a rope-making factory at Leeds Road when she left school at 13.

Her late husband, Thomas, worked as a process worker at ICI.

Mrs Bamforth celebrated with a party for family and friends and received a visit from the mayor.

She has two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
