AN EYESORE that was turned into a town centre oasis is celebrating its first birthday.

The Savoy Square in Cleckheaton was transformed from a derelict site in an attempt to make the town centre a more welcoming place.

The site of the former Savoy cinema had been derelict for 13 years until it was turned into a park which has proved hugely popular with people in the town.

Spen Valley Civic Society treasurer Donal O'Driscoll said the square has had a big impact on the town centre.

"We have done something very special to this site and it has changed the town for the better.

"Thousands of people drive through Cleckheaton every day and the first thing they used to see was a mess but now they will see Savoy Square.

"Many people use the space and there has so far been hardly any vandalism to the site.

"I think everyone would agree that it has been a real success and that is thanks to lots of people from those who were there from the start to those who still maintain and look after the square."

There's a birthday party which starts at 9.30am on Saturday and hundreds of people are expected to attend.

Events for all the family will go on throughout the day and at 12.30pm 200 balloons will be released to mark the occasion.
