PATIENTS and staff at a day centre for people with mental health problems have helped to repair a bridge.

The two staff and 11 patients from Mirfield-based Pathways have worked on several countryside improvement projects, including the latest, at Bradley Woods.

The projects are designed to enhance patients’ enjoyment of the countryside and boost their esteem.

They include improving footpaths and dry stone walling.

A Pathways officer, Ken Ward, who organised the projects, said: “The knowledge that they are doing something good for their community gives our service users a real sense of purpose.”

Resource development manager Anne Sharpe said: “Too many people are quick to dismiss people with mental health problems.

“But there are a lot of skilled people in the group and what they’ve achieved through this project is really impressive.”
