A woman was left scared to walk her dogs after two pets escaped from a Rawthorpe garden and attacked them.

One of her dogs, a Jack Russell, was so badly hurt that owner Faye Scott feared that it had died.

Patrick Scott pleaded guilty to two charges of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control.

The incident happened as Ms Scott walked past the 62-year-old’s home in Reservoir View on March 3.

She had her pets, a Jack Russell and a lurcher, on leads when Town’s two Staffordshire bull terriers shot out of the garden and ran towards them.

Miles Barker, prosecuting for Kirklees Council, said: “One sunk its teeth into the shoulder of the Jack Russell, it started shaking it and wouldn’t let go.

“The second dog went for the lurcher but there was no contact. The lurcher then started to protect the Jack Russell to stop the second Staffie from attacking the Jack Russell.”

Kirklees magistrates heard that the pet attacking the Jack Russell turned it onto its back and grabbed it by the throat.

Mr Barker said: “It stopped making noises and Ms Scott that it was dead.

“She then started to attack the first dog and it released its grip. At one stage she was bitten by one of the dogs though her leather gloves but was unable to identify which one.”

Town said that the dogs belonged to his daughter’s boyfriend but admitted that he was in charge of them that day.

Magistrates made a control order requiring one of the dogs, Minnie, to be muzzled and kept under proper control in public. The second pet, named Lulu, has since been put down.

Town must pay £200 fine, £572 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
