TOP actor Patrick Stewart stars today in a new film.

Or at least the voice of the Mirfield-born star does.

Stewart voices the part of Lloyd Steam in Steamboy,- an animated action adventure tipped to be a huge success.

Steamboy is described as a retro science fiction epic set in Victorian England.

It features an inventor prodigy, Ray Steam, who receives a mysterious metal ball containing a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation.

The young boy must use it to fight evil, redeem his family and save London from destruction.

Steamboy is tipped to be one of the most elaborate animated features of the year and it opens in cinemas across the country this week.

Other stars in the voiceovers are Anna Paquin and Alfred Molina.

Stewart, of course, is an internationally-respected actor, known for successfully bridging the gap between the theatrical world of the Shakespearean stage and contemporary film and television.

Stewart - who is also the Chancellor of Huddersfield University - continues to demonstrate his versatility with a wide range of projects.

He is well-known for his roles in hit movies. He stars as Prof Charles Xavier in 20th Century Fox's X-Men and X-2, both directed by Bryan Singer.

The X-Men films also feature all-star casts which include Sir Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden and Anna Paquin.

A third film is in production.

Stewart also starred as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek feature films, a role he played on television for six years.
