A man who led police on a chase around Lockwood has admitted dangerous driving.

Paul Cooper, of Binn Road in Marsden, pleaded guilty to the offence at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that the incident happened at 1pm on June 6 when a police officer’s attention was drawn to Cooper.

The 37-year-old was heading up Swan Lane and sped off when he noticed the police car following him.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman told the court that Cooper exceeded the speed limit as he drove through residential streets at 60mph between rows of parked cars.

After a five minute circular chase around the area, Cooper stopped his Mitsubishi Space Star due to an oncoming vehicle.

He was detained and admitted to police that his driving had been ‘terrible’.

Mr Bozman said: “He accepted he should have stopped and almost lost control.”

Sonia Kidd, mitigating, said that her client had previous dealings with the officer involved in the chase and felt that he had a personal vendetta against him.

She added “On the day he’s panicked and knows it was foolish and dangerous.

“He describes his driving as terrible and understands the consequences.”

District Judge Michael Fanning ordered a report from probation staff before dealing with Cooper further.
