A man has been jailed over a string of burglaries at businesses in Dewsbury.

Paul Thornton smashed his way into the firms with a crowbar, snatching £3,000 from one and breaking into charity boxes on display in another.

The 37-year-old was jailed for 10 months for the spate of early morning burglaries that took place this month.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that Thornton twice targeted Novo coffee shop, which is based in Longcauseway in Dewsbury town centre.

Between July 9 and 12 he broke in, smashing a window to gain entry and taking £3,000 in cash. During his second raid on the shop between July 19 and 22 he stole a laptop and computer monitor. On July 7 Thornton attacked Argos in the Princess of Wales Precinct and stole various pieces of jewellery.

The Time Piece pub in Northgate was struck by him on July 28.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “CCTV showed a male entering with a crowbar. He then removed the cash box from the fruit machine and emptied two charity boxes.”

Thornton, of Wakefield Road in Earlsheaton, admitted the incident at the pub when police caught him over another burglary which had taken place earlier the same morning.

The court heard that Thornton had previous convictions for house and commercial burglaries.

In 2011 he was jailed for three years for a robbery.

District Judge Michael Fanning sentencing him to 10 months in custody, telling him: “These are targeted and obviously planned as you carried a crowbar.”
