It was the kindest cut of all.

Mother-of-two Paula Butler has made good on her promise to donate her waist-length hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients.

Paula, 43, of Crosland Moor, decided to have her 24-inch locks turned into hair pieces in memory of sister Diane Welborn, 56, of Deighton, who lost her hair during chemotherapy after being diagnosed with blood cancer. Diane died in April just seven weeks after her diagnosis.

As well as donating her hair to Leukaemia Research, Paula decided to raise money for Kirkwood Hospice at the same time. Paula’s mum, Iris Rushworth, died of a brain tumour three years ago and Diane’s husband died of the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma seven years ago. Both were cared for at the Dalton-based hospice.

Paula underwent her drastic haircut at the XTG salon in Huddersfield’s Byram Arcade, which is run by a relative, Sam Bullas.

Her efforts have raised at least £700 for her chosen charities.

Sporting her new close-cropped look, Paula said: “The first thing I’m going to do is get a woolly hat because it feels really cold! My head feels really light.”
