KIRKLEES council house tenants are being offered prizes for paying their rent on time.

A special prize draw for a theatre trip to London will be held for all those whose accounts are in the black on March 31 next year.

Principal housing manager Dave Bennett said: "We are keen to reward those tenants who keep their rent accounts up to date and we hope this incentive will encourage anyone who owes us money to pay a little extra each week to catch up."

Current tenants owe just under £1.8m, according to latest figures.

Tenants have two rent-free weeks at Christmas and New Year.

Mr Bennett urged people who were behind with their rent to keep paying during those weeks.

He said: "Every pound we collect during those two weeks immediately reduces outstanding arrears.

"We are urging all tenants in arrears to continue to pay as normal to help themselves reduce the burden of debt."

All tenants in arrears are receiving a letter this month advising them how much they owe.

Mr Bennett urged anyone having trouble with payments to contact housing staff for advice.
