KIRKLEES-based Pennine Canoe Club members are helping a pensioner canoeist complete an epic journey around England.

Seventy-year-old David Penk, from Guildford, has embarked on a 700-mile circular canoe trip to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

The six-week journey takes him from Surrey through Oxfordshire to Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Lincoln, Peterborough, London and back to Surrey.

Pennine Canoe Club is planning to meet David on the River Calder at Wakefield on July 30 and support him for the two to three days he will be in the area.

Chairman David Jefferies said: “We will be paddling up the navigation past Dewsbury and Mirfield to the Huddersfield Broad Canal and on to Huddersfield.”

The group will also accompany David along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal to the Standedge Tunnel.

The club is planning on organising a presentation to mark the event.
