PENSIONERS in Huddersfield were unable to collect their pensions because of a computer breakdown yesterday.

Post Office staff found themselves inundated with hundreds of calls after the breakdown which affected the new electronic card machines.

The problems affected towns across the country, and several hundred terminals were effectively out of action.

One Honley man said: "The new system only came in this summer but it failed yesterday.

"It could not have happened at a worse time for many people, only days before Christmas."

A Post Office spokesman said there had been intermittent problems with the online system.

Some clients had been given one-off payments of £20 but the system was up and running normally later in the day.
