SO MAY I introduce to you, an act you’ve known for all these years – the Thurstonland Lonely Hearts Club Band!

Little did The Beatles realise that when they sang Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band back in the 60s that Huddersfield pupils would be recreating it four decades later.

But the children of Thurstonland First School donned hippy clothes to recreate the iconic Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band LP cover.

They may have been missing an appearance by The Beatles, Fred Astaire, Bob Dylan and Marilyn Monroe who all appeared on the original.

But Thurstonland pupils painted modern day stars including Homer Simpson and Leona Lewis for their cover.

Student teacher Steve Barrans was the brainchild behind the idea.

He got the school pupils to dress in 60s psychedelic clothes, hippy gear and throw-backs to the Beatles era.

Mr Barrans, who has been at the school for four weeks, said: “I have been teaching the pupils about the history of music which is why we are doing this.

“It gives the pupils the chance to get creative and feel part of something as iconic as the album cover.

“The children have absolutely loved it and have been really enthusiastic about the whole project

“Not many of them knew much about 60s music before we started on the project.

“Some pupils had heard of The Beatles but couldn’t name who they were, others knew bits about other music.

“I think they have certainly got a better appreciation of music from that era now.”

The pupils needed no encouragement to dress in soldiers outfits, don coloured shades or a wig as part of the project.

They were even amused to learn that their headteacher Josephine Martin used to wear clothes similar to those they were styling.

Pupils in all classes created their own pop art and sculptures for the project.

Mr Barrans created the iconic drum logo, but this time renamed it the Thurstonland Lonely Hearts Club Band.

He has been at the Thurstonland school as part of his training and has another three weeks left before he returns to Sheffield Hallam University.

He added: “It’s amazing here. It’s a great school with great children who are so enthusiastic.”
