A JANUARY meeting on a freezing football pitch led to 50 years of marriage for a Marsden couple.

Robert and Evelyn Lambert, of Netherley Drive, have just celebrated their golden wedding.

They were married at St Bartholomew's Church in Marsden.

Mrs Lambert, who was born in Marsden, met Mr Lambert, from Gorple, near Hebden Bridge, while he was playing football at Marsden.

The couple lived with Mr Lambert's parents at Milnsbridge, before moving to Outlane. In 1956, they moved to Netherley Drive, before building their current house, just yards away, in 1991.

Mrs Lambert was a mender at a Linthwaite mill and was a warden for the elderly. Mr Lambert ran the family firm, Lambert's Haulage, for 25 years.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with two surprises organised by their four children.

Mrs Lambert had to decipher a puzzle - which led to the couple having a week's holiday at a hotel. Later they were treated to a surprise meal.
