A pensioner attacked and beaten in the street when he tried to calm a row between teenagers is back home after a hip replacement operation.

Philip Evans, 66, of Kirkheaton, underwent surgery at Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax last week.

He has just been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

Mr Evans, who has mild dementia, came across the youths as he made his way home from the pub around midnight on Friday, October 16.

When he intervened in the dispute he was struck and fell, hitting his head.

He was beaten on the ground and curled into a ball to protect himself.

An ambulance was called and Mr Evans was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and later transferred to Halifax for the operation.

His son Jonathan, 20, said his dad underwent hip replacement surgery last Wednesday and was now home.

Bankfield Lane, Kirkheaton, Hudderfield.

He has been given crutches and a walking frame and has been warned that any fall could cause a dislocation of the hip. He remains confused about exactly what happened on the night.

Jonathan said: “He’s all right in himself but it’s going to be a very long process to get him well again.

“We still want justice and I think somebody out there saw what happened and knows who was involved.”

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and released on bail. Police enquiries continue.
