Thieves have stolen money from a 68-year-old woman in Huddersfield.

And police - who labelled the incident as “dreadful” - believe it may be the same pickpockets who robbed an 82-year-old man of his pension in Huddersfield last week.

In the latest incident, on Monday, a 68-year-old woman had just withdrawn cash from the Halifax Bank on Market Street in Huddersfield.

She was approached by a man and a woman outside the bank. The man asked for directions and after the pair had gone, the victim realised the money she had just withdrawn had been stolen from her handbag.

Last week, an 82-year-old man was robbed of £300 by two suspects at Super News at Huddersfield Bus Station.

The pensioner, a regular at Ladbrokes, in Upperhead Row, entered the bookies in an agitated state after feeling someone rifle through his pockets.

When bookmaker David Lomas heard what had happened he launched a fundraiser to help, and has set up a webpage where the public can donate money to replace the stolen pension.

Police say the Market Street incident could be linked.

The suspects are both described as being in their 30s with dark hair. The man spoke with broken English.

PC Caroline Loran, of Huddersfield District Police, said: “This was a dreadful incident where suspects stole money from a pensioner causing a great deal of distress.

“A similar incident happened on March 1, when thieves pick-pocketed an 82-year-old man at Huddersfield bus station.

“It is possible the suspects are the same and we need to identify these people before they carry out any further offences.”
