TWO people have been arrested in Gran Canaria following the death of Dewsbury’s Abigail Harris.

The 12-year-old died after a blue Ford Escort mounted the pavement in Puerto Rico on Sunday evening, where her family were holidaying.

The vehicle did not stop but a taxi driver gave chase, convincing the occupants to return to the scene.

Press reports on the island named the two in the Escort as father and daughter Jaime and Ingrid.

On Tuesday a judge in Gran Canaria extended their detention and took the male’s licence and both of their passports.

They have been charged with reckless homicide.

Only the male was qualified to drive, but onlookers said it was Ingrid who had been at the wheel.

Thomas Thackray, 12, was also injured in the incident but has since been released from hospital.

It is understood that there were no signs of the car braking at the scene.

Investigating officers are also said to be looking at CCTV footage.
