THE moon has never looked so big – or yellow – as it does here in the darkness against both Castle Hill and Emley Moor mast.

Gary Quarmby captured this great shot from Felk Stiles Road at the top of Linthwaite – but was still disappointed with it.

“I was hoping to get the moon directly over both Castle Hill and the mast, but it just wasn’t possible,’’ he said. “Capturing it to the side was the next best thing.

“To get the shot it was a matter of running about. It was taken from road from Colne Valley High School up to Crosland Health golf course.’’

At the time Gary took the photograph the moon was in what is known as ‘super moon’ status.

When this happens, it is relatively close to earth, being a mere 220,625 miles away which makes it seem brighter and more yellow than usual.

This was the first time since January 1992 that it had been so close and at its furthest can be 250,000 miles away.

Gary, of Linthwaite, works for Cummins Turbo Technologies in Turnbridge. He is married to Joanne and has a son, Jonathon, 22.
