Iconic movie posters have been given a whole new look – to highlight the drama of golf’s US Open Championship.

Huddersfield-based golfing goods supplier Direct Golf has created the posters which parody movie blockbusters The Incredible Hulk, The Empire Strikes Back, Enter the Dragon, Mad Max and Snakes on a Plane.

The posters, which have been released on the internet, reference five historic moments from the history of the tournament. Direct Golf, based at Leeds Road, teamed up with Leeds-based agency twentysix digital to produce the posters and whet the appetite of golf fans as the 115th US Open gets under way today at Chambers Bay on America’s Pacific Northwest.

The Empire Strikes Back commemorates Tony Jacklin’s 1970 victory while The Incredible Tiger recalls Tiger Woods’ 2008 play-off success. The 2010 and 2011 wins of Northern Ireland duo Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy are remembered with Mad Macs while Johnny Miller’s 1973 triumph is the subject of Enter the Desert Fox. A bizarre incident in 1971 when Lee Trevino threw a rubber snake at Jack Nicklaus ahead of their play-off match-up was the inspiration for Snakes on the Green.

Simon Corp, Direct Golf’s marketing manager, said: “Somebody – I can’t remember who – came up with the seemingly bizarre idea of Tony Jacklin’s 1970 win as the Empire Strikes Back and it sort of spiralled from there.

“Golf is all about having fun and the guys at twentysix digital and we here at Direct Golf have enjoyed ourselves coming up with these ideas. We hope they tickle other people’s fancy, too.”

Direct Golf, founded in 1991 by John Andrew, a Fellow of the PGA, started with a single shop in Huddersfield. It now has 21 stores across the UK as well as a significant chunk of the web and mail-order golf market.
