A Huddersfield town centre street was closed off this morning - Sunday - following an attack.

A man is being treated for serious head injuries at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after the assault, which took place on Cross Church Street at around 5am.

A man is being quizzed by police over the attack and Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, has issued an urgent appeal for witnesses.

She said: “The victim is currently being treated for a serious but non-life threatening head injury.

“We are now appealing for any witnesses, in particular someone who identified the suspect to a special constable at the time.”

Investigations are continuing at the scene today
