An Emley Moor mast worker has paid tribute to his late mother and her carers at the most spectacular location in Kirklees – his “office”.

Steve Megyery, an engineer at the 1,084 ft tall transmitting station, raised thousands for a Leeds hospice that treated his mum Elaine in December and January.

After she sadly passed away aged just 72, Steve decided to give something back to the charity that runs the Headingley-based Wheatfields Hospice.

He took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge with fellow mast worker Steve Phillips, raising more than £1,000 for Sue Ryder.

And after scaling the heights of the county’s three tallest hills he continued the lofty theme by handing over the cash to the charity at the summit of Britain’s tallest building.

He said: “Watching my mum die was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do but the people at Wheatfields Hospice were absolutely amazing, dealing with both my mum’s needs and the needs of her close family in the final days of her life.

“The nurses and medical staff all did an amazing job of caring for her needs and helping my family deal with what is effectively a hopeless situation.

“The staff were amazing and helped me come to terms with the fact that my mum was dying.

“They answered my questions sensitively but honestly and helped me be there for my mum when she needed me most.

“I spent most of the last three days of my mum’s life at her side and I held her hand and kissed her face as she took her last breath.

“This was one of the hardest things i have ever done but I’m so glad I was able to do this and I couldn’t have done this without the setup at Wheatfields Hospice.“

Arqiva, the firm that runs the Emley Moor mast, has also contributed £500, giving a total of £1553.75.

Sue Ryder fundraiser, Roohi Lupton, said: “Dying doesn’t work 9-5, nor do we. At Wheatfields Hospice we offer 24 hour care to our patients and their families.

“It is donations like those from Steve that mean that our patients can have a cup of tea with their families at any time.

“The money raised means that staff are available around the clock and that families can visit whenever they want.

“Steve is making it possible for this great 24/7 care to continue for other families in the area, just like the care provided to his mum.

“Thank you to Steve and his colleague, Steve, for climbing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, and to his company, Arqiva, who match funded his donation.”
