The sheer scale of Huddersfield’s new Leisure Centre has been revealed with a bird’s eye view.

Technicians from a West Yorkshire company captured the centre from the air with stunning images and a film.

And their images show the size of the new centre which is on a former car park at Springwood and is set to open within weeks.

Workmen have spent the past couple of days erecting signage at the new centre and also working on the land surrounding the building.

Merton Street, the road which runs in front of the centre, is also being resurfaced. It is expected to carry more traffic once the new centre opens in the early summer, with a car park for centre users at the top of the site..

The aerial footage was shot by Queensbury-based Sky View, a company which provides film for building firms and estate agents.

Chartered surveyor Russell Smith, who is one of those involved, said: “We use remotely-piloted multicopters, commonly referred to as drones.

“These are electric powered so produce very little noise and are environmentally friendly.

“We operate under Civil Aviation Authority guidelines which allow us to fly the craft at up top 400 feet, whereas planes must stay above 500 feet.

“For filming like we did in Huddersfield, we use a video/still camera mounted on a three-axis gimbal, which sends a live video feed back to the ground for framing the shots in real time as well as recording the HD images on board the craft”.

He said the crew set up their base in the car park to fly the craft above the £36m centre.

“Most of the shots we produced were filmed at a height of 80 metres and you can see the scale of the new centre.

“It is certainly a very striking building”.

The centre which boasts a family fun pool as well as other pools, fitness suites and a huge sports hall, will replace the 40-year-old existing Huddersfield Sports Centre in Southgate.
