MORE areas in Kirklees could become no-go areas for cold callers to help stop conmen.

No Cold Calling Zones have been recommended for Meltham, Cowcliffe, Lockwood (Thornfield Avenue) and Marsh.

They have been supported by the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee.

The zones will include signs and posters informing door step traders they are not welcome.

The zone helps prevent people being targeted by conmen.

A pilot scheme already exists in Emley.

Residents joined forces with Kirklees Safer Communities Partnership, West Yorkshire Trading Standards, Kirklees Victim Support and the local neighbourhood watch scheme.

Anne Bedford, fundraising treasurer for Emley neighbourhood watch, said conmen were thinking twice about visiting their village.

"It has kept people away, it certainly has."

She described how the zone can be useful.

"I have used it when I have had a phone call.

"They go through numbers and they've got lists from all over. I said to someone who rang three times one Saturday morning, it was a certain magazine, `Do you know that we live in a no cold calling zone?'

`You're creating a nuisance and I'm going to report you unless you stop it.'

"I said three times was just not on I wasn't going to have it and just by gently saying that to him I've never had one since from that source."

She added the zone would be a useful addition to any area.
