LOCATIONS for new bottle banks to replace the door-to-door glass recycling service have been announced.

Kirklees Council decided earlier this year to end kerbside glass collections to save £468,000 a year.

Now the council hopes householders will continue to recycle by taking bottles and jars to recycling sites.

The cost of the service to collect bottles from 117,000 households rose from £503,470 in 2009/10 to £788,301 the following year.

The council is boosting the number of glass recycling sites from 120 to 166 and 95% of residents will be within 1km of a site.

A council spokeswoman said: “The locations for new sites have been identified and the bottle bins delivered.

“The last door-to-door collection of glass will be on Friday, March 29.

“Residents may keep the boxes if they wish and we would encourage them to use them to store bottles and transport them to their nearest bottle bank.

“Anyone not wanting their box can contact us via Kirklees Direct or the web site.”

She added that people living in areas with communal bins, such as apartment blocks, should not put glass into their recycling bins and instead use the bottle banks.

A full list of every bottle bank site will be available at www.kirklees.gov.uk by the end of the week.
