A NEW conservation group is celebrating its first step towards improving Slaithwaite's spa area.
The Friends of Slaithwaite Spa formed recently to rejuvenate the recreation ground off Spa Lane.
Volunteers felt the area should be improved, to make it the heart of the community that it was in Victorian days, when it had a bandstand, tennis courts, swimming pool, spa and gardens.
The first major improvement is the arrival of three benches and a litter bin.
The Friends asked Kirklees Council for the items, to replace old and damaged ones.
Next on the group's list is to get trees and bushes that surround the site in order.
Member Chris Woolnough said: "We are planning to carry out some woodland management in the winter, to remove some of the trees that are blocking the view.
"I'm looking forward to sitting on the benches next spring and looking down the valley," he added.
The footpath through the site will also be refurbished, new safety fencing will be installed and bluebells and other wild flowers will be planted.
Anyone who wants to help with the project should phone River Colne project officer Mick Smith at the Colne Valley Trust on 01484 847798.
