FESTIVE lights and Christmas decorations across Kirklees look set to be co-ordinated by an official.

A council review panel recommends that such a co-ordinator be appointed to work with organising committees.

This could be a new official or an existing employee could take on the extra work.

Tomorrow, councillors will discuss the panel's final report into providing lights and decorations.

The panel, chaired by Tory Clr Nigel Patrick, was set up following concerns that the provision of festive lights throughout Kirklees was patchy - and in some areas non- existent.

Public meetings and information from community groups, agencies, other councils and committees was gathered.

The panel concluded that there was little networking or sharing of information among groups organising displays.

Inconsistencies in the proportion of council cash given to individual displays and a perceived unfairness about providing Christmas trees were also found.

The panel also recommends that highways staff erect and dismantle displays and store and test displays.

An audit of anchor points on buildings to which the wires or festive lights are attached is also recommended.
