PLANS for a community and sports centre in Mirfield backed by Hollywood star Patrick Stewart have yet to gain council approval.
Councillors decided to pass on the plans on the site of the Gilder Hall Youth Club to the council's planning and highways committee.
The site of the Gilder Hall Youth Club on Greenside Road was earmarked for housing in the council's Unitary Development Plan, its blueprint for planning throughout the area.
Mirfield-born Stewart returned to his roots this year to raise funds for the project to develop the site for community use.
The Star Trek and X-Men actor got a taste for the stage at Gilder Hall with a drama club there in the 1950s.
Planners say in a report that the community benefit of the scheme would outweigh the need to retain the site for housing.
Councillors who attended the meeting of the Kirklees Council planning sub-committee for the Heavy Woollen area said because the plans were a departure from the UDP, it would need to be referred to the planning and highways committee.
