Hotel rooms, apartments and a dental surgery form part of plans for the George Hotel.

Detailed plans now submitted to Kirklees feature a 30-bed hotel, 11 apartments, a luxury basement spa, dental centre and educational facility, plus a rooftop coffee shop and diner.

The iconic landmark and Grade II Listed building will also retain its public restaurant and function rooms, which will be refurbished.

The application has been submitted by Northpoint Living Developments for the change of use and refurbishment of the iconic St George’s Square hotel.

It comes a year after dentist and businessman Dr Altaf Hussain bought the troubled hotel, believed to be in excess of £900,000.

Work is currently under way on the exterior of the historic building.

The application says: “Planning the proposed refurbishment of the George, and considering the alternative options for the building, has taken a great deal of time in order to retain and preserve the historical look and features... but at the same time arriving at a scheme that could incorporate varied use and not relying on the hotel trade as a whole.

“The proposals that are planned for the George would allow the facility to be used more by the general public as well as a business and recreational hub, ensuring the financial viability of this historic listed building.”

Plans for the five-storey plus basement building will see the number of rooms reduce from 60 to 30 and the creation of 11 apartments for longer-term stays.

A rooftop coffee bar/diner is planned for the fourth floor and roof, overlooking the station and Square with a new orangery-style structure and an open terrace.

A coffee shop will be created adjacent to the ground floor entrance for wider public use while the basement, once the home to the Rugby League Heritage museum, will become a spa.

The application says the museum items, now housed at the John Smith's Stadium, are unlikely to return.

“As plans started to develop for the hotel the Rugby Football League was approached and options for a presence at the hotel were discussed and at this point no interest was shown.

“However new talks have taken place and it has been agreed that a permanent display in the charter suite is planned as well as regular use of the facilities for functions in connection with the sport.”

The first floor, overlooking Huddersfield Railway Station, will become an advanced dental care of excellence and educational facility.

Much of the hotel is to be redecorated, with the original features such as the panelled doors, skirting boards and coving in the bedrooms being retained and the function room and restaurant redecorated, with the ballroom extended.

Proposed apartments will overlook the railway station and John William Street.

The plans are open to public consultation until May 23 via Kirklees Council.
