A plan to tackle homelessness is being unveiled next week with a proposal to open a new shelter in the town.

Clare House, a former council office at Hillhouse, is to become a shelter for people who find themselves homeless.

Earlier this year Kirklees Cabinet backed £1.5m plans for Clare House, on Clare Hill, to become supported accommodation.

The deal would see Home Group, a social housing provider, run Clare House for 30 years for people aged over 21.

Next week Home Group will hold a public open day at the venue for people to find out more.

A spokeswoman said the proposal will tackle homelessness in the community.

She added: “The proposed development on the site of the council-owned building Clare House, will provide much needed accommodation, training and support for single homeless people or those at risk of sleeping rough.”

Representatives from Home Group will host a drop-in event on Wednesday, November 6, from 4pm-7.30pm at Clare House for people to find out more, ask questions and voice their opinions.

The scheme is to be part-funded by the Homes and Communities Agency through their Homeless Change funding programme.

The grant was to provide a hostel service for people at risk of sleeping rough to help get them back on their feet.

Kirklees offered the site rent free and the value of selling Clare House would be £250,000.

However, the council has a duty to provide support for homeless people.

Originally a hostel was to be in redundant council buildings at 6-8 St Peter’s Street, but the cost was too high.

The Clare House shelter was seen as a better option.

The organisation is a social enterprise and provides housing services to almost 30,000 vulnerable people every year in more than 500 supported housing locations.
