A GAS pipeline company has signed up to a new code to thwart doorstep conmen.

Transco has backed the Cold Calling Protocol Initiative which has been set up to protect the elderly and vulnerable from thieves who try to trick their way into their homes.

The scheme was set up by the Leeds Distraction Burglary Initiative which is led by former senior West Yorkshire detective Brian Steele.

Under the protocol, representatives from large companies who make doorstep visits must follow a simple procedure which involves them showing identification cards and also carry a larger version of the card for people with eyesight problems.

Anyone still not convinced can carry out further checks on the person at the door by calling Transco's emergency number on 0800 111 999 which operates 24 hours a day.

Mr Steele praised Transco for joining the scheme.

He said: "We've been talking to many members of the public and they greatly appreciate the service that Transco is offering.

"It makes them feel much safer in their homes, which is extremely important."
