The chance to slalom down Kilner Bank before enjoying some apres-ski drinks is one ski-boot closer.

That’s because the official planning application for Huddersfield’s first snowsports slope has been submitted.

The plan signifies the re-booting of the much anticipated HD One scheme around the John Smith’s Stadium.

A proposal for a new Radisson hotel on the current golf driving range was lodged with councillors two weeks ago.

Now a detailed vision of the snowsports slope has been submitted after Kirklees gave the overall idea the thumbs up last year.

The two schemes have been in the pipeline for almost a decade but stalled amid the credit crunch financial slow down.

But a £9m loan from the council towards the hotel is set to kick-start the regeneration.

The Town and Giants’ ground will play backdrop to a huge retail and leisure scheme with a ski-slope down the side of the ground on to the current St Andrew’s car park.

Snowflex dry ski-slopes

Stadium access points will not change.

The outdoor slope will use revolutionary Snowflex technology completely different to traditional dry ski slopes.

The surface, created by Holmfirth firm Briton Engineering, creates snow-like conditions using white fibre matting and integral misting.

Drawings provided for Kirklees Council show skiers and snowboarders will be whisked up the slope by two T-bar type ski-lifts.

A small “nursery slope” will be built facing Kilner Bank with a public viewing area in between.

The facilities will be complemented with a snowsports centre base and a shop.

The slope itself will feature jumps and other obstacles for experienced skiers and snowboarders to play on, including a half-pipe.

The applicants admit the slope will be visible for miles around but say it will help attract people to the area.

Plans show another large building at the foot of the slope backing on to the River Colne but what it is has not yet been revealed by the HD One team.

Revised plans for the larger HD One scheme are expected in the next few weeks but it looks set to feature a casino, a bowling alley and new shops, bars and restaurants on the land currently used as stadium car parks.

A new multi-storey car park will be built to replace the lost spaces.

Plans for a “tourist village” to help Huddersfield compete with Leeds and Manchester were first revealed publicly in 2008.

Kirklees Council then gave outline permission for the scheme in 2010.

At the time bosses behind the plan said it could create up to 1,000 jobs and bring £100m of investment to the area.
