MAJOR celebrations for one of Calderdale’s most iconic buildings are to take place this summer.

2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of Halifax Town Hall, and Calderdale Council is now looking for help to enable them to celebrate in style.

To commemorate the important anniversary of one of the most prominent buildings in Halifax town centre, the council is planning to hold an exhibition at the start of August, displaying items that represent the colourful and interesting history of the building.

Now they want residents across Calderdale and Huddersfield to get in touch if they have artefacts to lend to add to the exhibition.

They could be documents, invitations, commemorative brochures and anything associated with the design and development of the Town Hall and its official opening ceremony.

The Town Hall was built between 1861 and 1863, and was designed by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry.

He designed the hall in an ornamental style echoing the designs of his most famous project, The Houses of Parliament in London.

Halifax Town Hall was his last major project, as he died in 1860.

The building was opened on August 4, 1863 by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and an estimated 100,000 people attended the prestigious event.

Barry also worked on countless churches across Britain and did work on Harewood House, near Leeds, and on Highclere in Hampshire – the setting for the hit TV series Downton Abbey.

The Mayor of Calderdale, Clr Ann Martin (inset), of Brighouse, said: “Halifax Town Hall has an amazing history that many people in Calderdale may not be aware of.

“This exhibition will provide a fascinating insight into the history of the opening of the iconic town centre building. I encourage anyone who has interesting memorabilia to get in touch and share their piece of history with the rest of Calderdale.”

Events will be taking place throughout August, with the anniversary being celebrated on Sunday, August 4.

If anyone has items they would like to contribute to the exhibition, please contact Karen Burton on 01422 393021 or Sue Hanson on 01422 393022 at the Town Hall in Halifax.

Items will be safely handled and secured whilst on loan.
