RESIDENTS are being asked to give their views about plans to turn their village into a conservation area.

Knocking down buildings, tree cutting and minor developments such as porches, extensions, satellite dishes and boundary walls are among those to be controlled under plans to give Northowram, in Calderdale, the new status.

The label aims to help safeguard the historic and architectural character of the neighbourhood – which has connections with the Bronze Age and Saxon times.

Geoff Willerton, Calderdale Council’s head of planning, said: “It is important that people living in the affected area have the opportunity to make their views known on this issue – that’s why we will be conducting a thorough consultation.”

Leaflets are being sent to all properties affected by the proposal.

The council’s official consultation to gauge the views of local residents will be held between October 5 and November 5.

A series of consultation events have also been arranged, including a public meeting on October 7 at Northowram Methodist Church from 7pm until 9pm, with drop-in sessions from 6pm.
