Work is to take place to “soften” a new park play area in Huddersfield after a council U-turn.

Construction workers had been building a breeze-block structure in the children’s playground at Greenhead Park.

But now Kirklees Council has had a change of heart.

There had been safety fears about the new installation.

The council has back-tracked on the plans for a maze for young people after deeming it unsuitable for the under seven age group it was being created for.

Kirklees has now revealed details of a replacement plan, with a spokeswoman saying: “The council is keen to ensure that the new play area meets the needs of families with young children.

“As such we are making some changes to the planned maze so that it can be retained as a safe interactive sensory zone for children under 7.

“The basic structure will remain but will be softened with planting and overlooked by gentle grass mounds which will allow parents to supervise their children whilst they explore and play.”

It was after the original maze structure had been built out of breeze blocks that an inspection found it would be unsuitable for young people.

Kirklees officers have had to redesign the work.

Other play equipment being installed includes a climbing frame and swings.

The Examiner has asked for details on the cost of the original project, which many parents felt was unsuitable, but there has been no response as yet from the council.
