THE leader of Kirklees Council thinks the Queensgate Revival plans will put Huddersfield on the map.

Clr Robert Light said the huge scheme would make Huddersfield a major player in the West Yorkshire region once more.

He said: "It is important that Huddersfield develops to enhance its position as a big town. It is the second biggest retail centre in West Yorkshire.

"In the past, we have aimed to attract people into town and retain the trade we have.

"With this scheme, our objective aim is to compete with other centres for outside interest.

"It will move Huddersfield into a new league."

Clr Light said the council are keen to hear public views.

Detailed costings and timescales will be prepared once consultation was over.

He said: "We are hopeful that people will see this scheme as a credible one that will move Huddersfield forward.

"The question people will ask is, 'Is it viable?'. It is.

"We are very excited about this."
