A GROUP of householders are rolling up their sleeves to improve an historic pond area.

Twelve Oakes residents have pledged to tidy up the grot-spot between Woodlea Avenue and Wyvern Avenue, so more people can enjoy the area.

The three-level pond marks the site of the old water garden of Reinwood Manor.

It offers a haven for birds and other wildlife, but in recent years has been blighted by litter and flytipping.

Now, householders and local councillors have decided to make a stand.

A meeting of residents, councillors and Kirklees Council staff discussed how to improve the area.

A litter blitz will be organised, paths cleared and birdboxes put up.

Rachel Sixsmith, of Heywood Avenue, said: "There is quite a bit of litter and there is rubbish in the pond.

"We would like to get it cleared up and keep on top of the work."

Lindley ward councillor Christine Stansfield said: "When local people approached us about the issue we felt it was important enough to rally residents and get everyone together.

"The ponds and paths are a haven for wildlife and a special amenity for all those living in the vicinity.

"The water, trees and grassland will provide a great variety of insects, birds and mammals and be of interest to all people."
