A college has commemorated the work and dedication of a former top education chief with a plaque.

Kirklees College has unveiled the memorial in memory of the former chair of corporation Jeff Dakers, who died in April this year, at its Huddersfield site.

He was associated with the college for almost 30 years, including as chair of corporation for 12, and played a major part in securing the college’s move to its current building.

Mr Dakers, a former teacher at Huddersfield New College and headteacher at Salendine Nook Secondary Modern School, joined the corporation of Huddersfield Technical College in 1993 and held the position of vice-chair before becoming chair in 2001.

He held the post of chair through the merger which formed Kirklees College in 2008 and remained on the governing body until 2013, having overseen the building of the £74m building in the Waterfront Quarter.

To commemorate Jeff and his dedication to Kirklees College, conference facilities at the building in Manchester Road have been named in his honour.

And at the final governors’ meeting of 2014/15, Mr Daker’s widow Dorothy was invited to attend to unveil the dedication plaque.

Geoff Alvy, current chair of corporation said it was a huge honour to officially mark Jeff’s dedication and enthusiasm for the college.

He said: “Jeff successfully led us through many changes and challenges including the merger, Ofsted inspections and the new build at the Waterfront which will be a lasting memorial to his hard work and commitment”.
