CHILDREN at a playgroup are getting a healthy start in life, thanks to a gift of £6,308.

The tots at St Francis’ Playgroup, Fixby, will be exercising, eating smoothies and learning how to be healthy after a grant from The Local Network Fund.

The money was used to kick-start an Action Kids project aimed at boosting children’s health by getting them to do regular exercise through dance and play.

It has also been used to upgrade the kitchen at St Francis’ Community Centre and buy a smoothie maker so the children can make their own healthy snacks.

Karen Rothery, from the Fixby Road playgroup, said: “We want to attract more parents to our group and we feel we really can offer support and a healthy start in life with our Action Kids and healthy toddler sessions.

“We feel we have something really special to offer.”

Action Kids will get children moving through dance, exercise, games and gymnastics, which will give them the chance to build fitness and strength. Organisers also hope it will develop toddlers’ social skills and self-awareness and allow them to have fun as they sing and dance.
